New York City has the Statue of Liberty, Paris has the Eiffel Tower, London has Big Ben and Washington D.C. has the White House and the the Washington Monument..
So what landmark do people generally associate Madrid with? I personally don’t think there’s any landmark that could be shown to me which I’d recognise as being in Madrid or any other Spanish city!

You know, Madrid is one of those cities that really doesn’t HAVE just one landmark.
If I had to pick just ONE, well, I couldn’t do it! I was there a few years ago, and couldn’t figure on just ONE to put as, say, the beginning of my album for Madrid, or on my phone for a wall paper:
Tops ones, though, would be the Panadería at the Plaza Mayor, Puerta de Alcalá, Fuente de Cíbeles. I don’t think the Palace qualifies. It really, you have to KNOW it to know it’s the Spanish one…it’s not like, say, Notre Dame or the Eiffel Tower, massively identifiable. It’s almost nondescript from the outside.
Other cities in Spain have just one: The Cathedral and Giralda in Sevilla; Acueducto and Alcázar de Segovia (okay, that’s two, but they are BOTH iconic); Alhambra in Granada; Sagrada Familia in Barcelona.
There are many beautiful structures in Madrid, two of them are the Alcala Gate and Royal Palace.
Also Neptune’s Fountain is a good one for the Camera.
you’re right, it’s hard to pick one that stands out. there are many:
prado museum, retiro park, plaza d’espana…
one you might have seen is that fountain where they all jump in when they win big football matches etc – cibeles fountain
Cibeles. The statue of Cybele.
The view with the old post office behind is probably the most emblematic thing in Madrid.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plaza_de_Ci…
