When looking for a food you want to stay away from by-products, ground yellow corn, and any artificial flavors or colors. You want to get a premium food (basically a food that you HAVE to go to a pet specialty store to buy). When feeding a premium food, you may pay more per bag, but you will feed less and have less yard clean up (a big plus!) so in the long run it is actually cheaper.
Nutro makes excellent food. They have 3 lines: Max, Natural Choice, and Ultra. With all three lines you will get an all natural, human grade food with added vitamins and minerals; no ground yellow corn, which is a filler and a big allergen among pups; no by-products, which can include heads, feet and intestines; and no artificial flavors or colors. Nutro also has the highest levels of essential fatty acids (Omega 3 & 6) to help promote healthy skin and coat and also reduce shedding. Max is your basic premium food and from what I’ve seen the lowest priced premium food on the market. Natural Choice has taurine added and is made more for specific needs (i.e. sensitive skin, sensitive stomach, etc.). And Ultra is a holistic food with more fruits and vegetables, also known as super foods, which help with your pups immune system, joints, heart, vision, brain, etc.

I’ve heard of the raw diet doing wonders for dogs. Since he’s coming from a situation where he may not have been getting enough nutrients, you might want to try if for 6 months or so. Otherwise natural balance is my recommendation. Not all holistic dog foods are good for every dog, so you’ll have to try a couple of them out. Natural balance is a good place to start though.

The best dog foods on the market are Innova, EVO, Blue buffalo, Orijen, and Nutro.
Stay away from Purina, Beneful, Science Diet, Iams, Kibbles and Bits and any other dog food you can buy at a grocery store! They are full of fillers like corn!

A great brand is Science Diet! Or Beneful Playful Life. But you must slowly transfer him to that brand, gradually increasing the amount he receives daily.
Otherwise he may become sick, and throw up everywhere.
Being from a puppy mill, he’ll be a bit of a problem pooch, if not socialized, and trained, so make sure you work on that to!
Please, if you do not agree with my food choices, my vet even agreed that these were great brands! Beneful has eggs, beef, and other needed ingredients.
Science Diet is the 1# recommended brand vets say to feed their own dogs. I know many shelters who also agree.

I cannot recommend feeding any of the commercial varieties of meat-flavored baked paste with chemicals added. Instead, why not feed your dog actual food? The dog’s natural diet is raw meat on the bone. Try it. Blue Buffalo or a meat diet. Most major food brands are horriable for your dogs because the companies use fillers like corn or left over body parts from the animals to “fill” your dog up..not provide nutrients.
