Travel Advice Please?

By admin Posted in: Rome

I am only 13, graduating high school a 17 because was born in the summer, and I am dying to visit Italy for my senior trip, do you think I’m overreacting? Or what? I am totally fascinated by European culture but I only want to visit Pisa, Florence, and Rome. Should I go? Do you know of any “special things” that I could do? Like work over there or something? I will really appreciate websites and things because I will research gladly. Thanks for the comments! I’ll give points to the best websites!

I recommend going with friends. It is safer in a group. My sister went to Italy with a friend and the two of them received a LOT of unwanted attention from Italian men. Aside from that, they did have a good time. But if you go with a group, you should be safe. Youth Hostels are pretty cheap and reasonably safe. You can just check out the online reviews. These are a good measure of a place to stay. I found that I could use my Spanish all over Italy. You will have difficulty using English. Get Eurail passes and you can travel for free on trains, even sleeping on them. They are pretty comfy really. I think you can have a great time with only a little money if you just practice some reasonable precautions. You have plenty of time to prepare, that’s for sure.

DO NOT GO ALONE. this is the best advice you will ever get in your life

First of all, you are far too young to be working full-time. Secondly, you cannot just up and move to a European country and work there, it doesn’t work that way, and again, legally you would be considered far too young. In 10 years time with a university degree you might be considered, but not now.
Thirdly, at 13, there is NO airline going to take you all that way travelling alone. Absolutely out of the question. And if you are on your own at the other end, you would be considered easy meat for some of the predators over there … I’m sorry to be so blunt, but that’s the way it is. As it happens, some predator might already have seen your posting here and be trying to contact you to invite you over, and pretending to be a nice boy or girl around your age to lure you in. So you need to be careful.
In terms of travelling anywhere outside of your own country without your parents or responsible relatives: wait until you’re older.
In the meantime, you can go to your local library and get out some guidebooks and read through them – often much better than websites, although the information might be a bit dated, but there will be more historical info.
And from my experience, Pisa is only a day trip from Florence, other than the compound where the leaning tower is located, it’s a kip.

You cannot work in Italy unless you are an EU citizen, or have work permit & Visa.
I wouldn’t travel age 17, wait till your 18th birthday, it’s probably much less trouble (legal paperwork, etc.) than when you are a minor. There are many ancient cities in northern Italy and southern France that are just as exciting as Florence and Pisa; so you could easily fill a lot of time with city tours.
But if you only want to go on a short trip and see Rome, Florence and Pisa, do check out Contiki Travel. Their “Simply Italy” or “Italy Espresso” tours include those three places (Pisa is only a couple-of-hours stopover).http://ie.contiki.com/search?terms=italy
Contiki is respected and popular; the route, transport, accommodation, and timing are all done by them, so you don’t run into any kind of troubles as you do when trying to do that yourself.
They only accept travellers aged 18-35, so there’s no risk you end up on a bus tour full of pensioners. And you wouldn’t have to travel alone, so it’s much safer. And many outgoing young people [as in "people that' aren't me" ;-) ] also like the fact that you can meet other young people on that journey.
Prices seem to be given in Euros (haven’t found a button for swithching currencies) and they do not include your airplane ticket, because people booking the tours come from all kinds of different countries. And, the way Contiki work and calculate their prices, you are expected to share a twin-bedded room with another girl.
