Is New York City Greater Than Los Angeles?

By admin Posted in: New York

Like any other Californian I would like to think that the answer is no. However, compare the number of questions in the NYC section of Y!A Travel vs. that of LA. Over there, one person after another poses a question about an upcoming trip of theirs to New York and they’re just giddy with excitement; you don’t see a lot of that with LA questions. And when people ask what attractions or must-see places there are in NYC, NNY typically offers this long list of attractions virtually all of which are in NYC proper; this contrasts with the O-man list or lists which currently are lesser and contain locations outside LA. Moreover, NYC really seems to have a dominant presence in TV and movies today, more so than LA which you tend to see in car commercials or a few shows here and there.
Granted: there are cultural attractions in Los Angeles which are frequently not mentioned in Y!A and which are not shown on TV. But then, the same is true of New York. So my question is this: Is NYC greater than LA, and if not then what can be done to improve the image of Los Angeles?

  1. West of Encino Says

I would say six of one, half dozen of the other. granted, NYC has better broadway shows, pizza and Italian restaurants, and transportation. But we have better Mexican restaurants and hamburger joints.. traffic sucks in both areas, but Los Angeles has better weather in the winter.
saying that, The sidewalks roll up by 10 pm in LA, but New York Never closes.
to be honest Both cities are trashy. But since Ive lived here all my life …. I prefer Los Angeles, even though i got my eye on the pacific northwest, MAINLY because of the influx of illegal aliens, that are turning my city into a 3rd world sewer and ruining a once 1st rate school system to a level below Mississippi. if that sounds racist, so be it, but i’ve seen the decline over the last 2 decades.

I’d go to NYC twelve times before I’d go to LA once.
LA has nothing to offer compared to NYC, that’s why they call it the greatest city in the world.

  3. Doug Says

I’ve only been to LA once but live outside of NYC, first off LA is a huge sprawling city, you cant walk it. Venice Beach is polluted and overated.
What makes NYC so great is the ability to easily navigate the city, walk around everything. Theres so much to do and see, and also 4 other boroughs .I like NYC a lot better than LA but it may just be that im used to NYC

NYC has character/attitude that LA just doesn’t have.
    Ya’ll are to laid back.

Just to clarify my take on the question:
When people ask where to go, I like to add a bit of info about the place. I used to have a long list of just names, totalling about 50 places or so. It’s by choice that I list fewer places. Paris Hilton used to list about 80 or so places in here answer.
So I don’t think NYC is greater, by any means.
Yes, NYC is compact, but that’s the way they are. They didn’t have to develop their city with the real threat of earthquakes, according to earthquake codes. So they built UP. We in LA could not build tall building for DECADES. By law, the tallest building in LA was City Hall until the 80’s. So all those tall buildings are less than 30 years old. In the meantime, we built OUT, spreading out like a giant blob on the landscape.
So NYC is different, but not necessarily better. For example, I hear the east was over 100 degrees this weekend and humid. Here it was in the 70’s. Perfect. Which is better now?

  6. Lea Says

    I live in NYC.
This Summer i am traveling to LA. I’ve never been to California!
    I am sooooo excited.
So, it really depends how you look at this question. Where you’re from.

Nyc has lots to see. but its small. NYC has some small *** sidewalks that you can barely walk on. LA is big in its size, but nyc is big in its population and skyscrapers tall buildings, Los Angeles is huge and widespread, nyc is just an small long island, AND BESIDES LA HAS DISNEYLAND AND ITS BEACHES SO HA!!!!!! AND IS HAS HOLLYWOOD. AND THE MAYORITY IN MOVIE FILMS ARE MADE HEAR, BUT PUT THE BACKGROUND AS NYC. BUT LA RULES!!
